A Practical Home Designed for a New Way of Living

Based on our base model Fitzroy design, this home was selected for its efficiency, simplicity and ability to meet the immediate needs of a young family transitioning from metropolitan living to a semi-rural setting. The clients, with a toddler and plans for a more flexible, home-based lifestyle, were seeking an affordable solution that would allow them to establish themselves on a larger block while retaining the option to expand their use of the property over time.

The move to a semi-rural location introduced a different set of considerations compared to a typical metro build. Essential services such as a septic system and rainwater tank were required, with these elements managed directly by the owner. This approach reflects both a cost-conscious mindset and a level of hands-on involvement often seen in rural and lifestyle properties, where flexibility and staged development are key.

A Modular Home with Long-Term Vision

While the home itself follows a standardised footprint, its true value lies in how it supports the broader vision for the site. The design allows for future integration with additional structures, including a large garage space to accommodate the client’s passion for rebuilding and renovating cars. At the same time, the internal layout offers the potential for a home-based business, aligning with future plans to create a flexible workspace.

The project highlights an important aspect of affordable housing – providing a solid, high-quality foundation that enables homeowners to grow into their property over time. Rather than overextending on the initial build, the clients have prioritised a well-designed, efficient home that meets their current needs while leaving room for future investment and personalisation.
